I was most surprised to discover that one of the very few farriers on the island, Dean Rose, not only qualified as a farrier in the UK but was trained in Pontyberem near Carmarthen in my neck of the woods! So it was perhaps not surprising that he did an excellent job shoeing Mace on Saturday.
Dean shoes horses all over the island, and every few weeks he travels over six hours from where he lives on the west coast to shoe horses on the Avalon peninsula. He is now my official ride farrier, though I hope I will not have to call him out too often.
Cabot and wife Deirdre came out to support, and took me into St John's afterwards for a delicious meal with a welcome glass or two of wine.
